Earth Hour A Bust In California?
“The light gray line is the forecasted power usage, shown in Megawatts. The red line is the actual power consumed. Around 1900 hours, 7 p.m., the load was approximately 24,000 MW. By 8:00, the load increased smoothly to just over 26,000 MW. Then the load began a steady decrease right on through the night, ending at around 22,000 MW at almost midnight.
There was no apparent decrease in the power load throughout the state, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. No step changes, nothing, nada, zip, zilch.”
It would be interesting to see if this holds true throughout the USA, or even the world. I have no clue how one would go about getting that data, though. Still, if the California example holds true in even a large number of other places, then maybe it wasn’t as big a success as some have claimed. But of course the environmentalists are going to claim it to be a success. And I’m not saying it’s a bad idea at all. Still, the whole issue with California makes me think whether Earth Hour is truly about saving energy while sending a message, or if it’s simply about sending a message.
